How soon is too soon for maternity leave?
The earliest you can start your maternity leave is usually 11 weeks before your due date. However, even if you decide to work right up until your due date, if you end up taking time off with a pregnancy related illness during your last month of pregnancy, your leave will start then.

What happens to maternity leave if baby comes early?
If your baby is born early, and before your maternity leave has started, maternity leave will start automatically the day after the birth. You must tell your employer that you have given birth as soon as possible, and make sure they know the date your baby arrived.
What happens if you go into Labour before maternity leave?
If you give birth before the start of your maternity leave, your SMP period will start on the day following the actual date of birth. You should resign in the normal way, giving the notice period stated in your contract or agreed with your employer. You are entitled to remain on maternity leave for up to 52 weeks and resign towards the end of your maternity leave period if you decide that you are not able to return to work.
