Will the April 15 deadline be extended?
Though last year the IRS extended the deadline from April 15 to July 15, this year the agency has granted us only one extra month: Your 2020 tax return is due on May 17, 2021. If you request an extension (and are approved), your last day to file will be Oct. 15, 2021.
Are taxes still due by April 15?
This tax season, the traditional federal income tax deadline for individual returns shifts from April 15 until May 17. Ditto for the Michigan income tax deadline. Of course, the extension for filing a return — granted by the IRS due to the ongoing pandemic — doesn’t mean we can all stop worrying about taxes completely.

When to file extension of time for tax return?
If April 15 doesn’t fall on a weekend or legal holiday, you must file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, on or before April 15 for your return to be considered timely if filed after April 15.

Is there an extension to file your 2020 tax return?
If you need even more time to complete your 2020 federal returns you can request an extension to Oct. 15 by filing Form 4868 through your tax professional, tax software or using the Free File link on IRS.gov. Filing Form 4868 gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file their 2021 tax return but does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes due.
When to file Form 4868 for tax extension?
Filing Form 8892, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Form 709 and/or Payment of Gift/Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax on or before April 15, 2021. [2] However, if a taxpayer files the Form 4868 after April 15, 2021 but on or before May 17, 2021 it will only serve to extend the time to file the income tax return.
