Sizzling Summer Reads Party 2013

The Romance Reviews!

Sizzling Summer Reads conjures up images of oil-slicked bodies lounging in cozy recliners near water’s edge. The exotic scent of coconut wafts on a gentle breeze. A stroll in the damp sand reveals sun worshipers absorbing some rays, others huddled beneath umbrellas in dark glasses, their noses buried in romance novels – or nowadays even more likely – an ereader.

Whether you love small town romance, paranormal, historical, or western, there are as many romance novel subcategories as there are days in the year. Nearly.

How about a sizzling summer sheikh romance? While you enjoy a sandy beachscape, read The Sheikh’s Spy. It takes place in the golden desert in Zahiria, one of the fictitious kingdoms surrounding the Golden Triangle.

Imagine how Olympia Green feels when she is taken by a dark sheikh as collateral for the gambling debt her brother Rick has just incurred, and can’t pay. Loaded onto a private jet like a piece of luxury baggage, she is thrown into the harem of a desert fortress.

Olympia escapes, crosses a small section of desert, and enters neighboring Zahiria. Her objectives are few: warn Sheikh Adnan of Zahiria that his life is in danger, and find her missing brother, Rick.

Adnan is unsure he can trust the beauty that thwarted palace security and materialized in his office in the middle of the night, but the chemistry between them sizzles even hotter than a summer read.

A new title in the Sheikhs of the Golden Triangle series releases this summer: The Sheikh’s Crowning. Yes, Rick gets his own story, and you will be delighted to see who captures this undercover agent’s heart.

While you await this newest story, enjoy The Amulet, series prequel. It gives you the magical, mysterious history of the desert kingdoms, and identifies the strife that endures through more than a century of royals. There is also a sweet romantic ghost story in the series called Christmas Spirits.

Long ago, a witch named Oonagh crafted a magical item that was to wield protection over Zahiria. Instead, it became a disputed treasure that has spurred countless wars. What is the magical item?

A  The Crystal Ball

B  The Amulet

C  The Crown

Important To earn points and qualify for the grand prize, you must answer this question on June 10, 2013 by visiting The Romance Review.

Blog Hop For Authors – May 2013

My author friend Adite Banerjie invited me to participate in this blog hop. You can read her answers to the questions here.

Since becoming an author, I’ve been privileged to meet many wonderful authors. There is no group of people more warm-hearted and willing to share their knowledge and assistance. Below, you’ll find links to authors who will be answering the same questions.

1.  What is the working title/title of your book or project?

The Sheikh’s Spy is a novella. It’s the first story in the Sheikhs of the Golden Triangle series. The prequel is called The Amulet. The Sheikh’s Crowning is coming in June 2013.

2.  Where did the idea come from for the book or project?

I’ve read many sheikh romance stories over the years, mostly set in fictitious lands, with fearless heroes and strong heroines who knew how to tame their hearts. I often thought I’d like to create such a world someday. Hence, the series Sheikhs of the Golden Triangle was born.

3.  What genre does it fall under, if any?

Romance; romantic suspense; paranormal romantic suspense.

4.  If applicable, who would you choose to play your characters in a movie?

Good question! I haven’t even thought about that yet… if anyone who reads The Sheikh’s Spy has any actor and actress recommendations, please leave a comment below!

5.  What is the one-sentence synopsis of your manuscript or project?

When Olympia Green is held as collateral against her brother’s gambling debt, she escapes from the evil sheikh’s desert fortress and arrives unannounced in the palace of Sheikh Adnan of Zahiria in the middle of the night with a message that rocks his world.

6.  Will your book or story be self-published or represented by an agency?

My book was recently self-published in a company name, Quartz Eagle Enterprises LLC. It is available at Amazon, Amazon UK, BN, Kobo and soon Smashwords.

7.  How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

I wrote the novella during a period of about six weeks. There was frequent revising and editing included in that time.

8.  What other book or stories would you compare this story to within the genre?

I can’t think of a book that is similar because The Golden Triangle, and the unique countries surrounding it, have been created for this series. There are many sheikh romances on the market that may be similar in some aspects, but I hope I succeeded in making this series unique.

9.  Who or what inspired you to write this book or story?

The exotic aura of the desert romances written by the authors of previous sheikh books I’ve enjoyed over the years!

10.  What else about the book or story might pique the reader’s interest?

At the heart of the desert kingdoms lies a golden triangle common to them all, and tied in deeply with this is an amulet forged by a witch. In the making of the amulet, a great price was paid. As the series unfolds further, the wronged party will be revealed.

The Tortured Hero and the Sheikhs Harem

Harems belong in sheikh-style romances. So, how can a tortured hero be involved when the sheikh is the ultimate alpha male, in charge of his world in all ways?

In The Sheikh’s Spy, there are good sheikhs and bad sheikhs. The good sheikh’s harem quarters functions like a spa where the women of his palace can relax and be soothed with massages, pedicures and all other good things. The harem quarters in the bad sheikh’s palace are used to house sex slaves. The problem is that they are young women who were kidnapped and are part of a human trafficking ring.

When Rick Green, an undercover agent, ends up on the wrong side of the dark and dangerous Sheikh Mahjub, he soon finds himself imprisoned in the dungeon of the Burindi palace, and becomes a true tortured hero. He’s regularly beaten, abused and starved. I’ll promised to make up to him by giving him his own novella, The Sheikh’s Crowning, coming in May 2013!

A Different Kind of Tortured Hero

To Kiss a Leprechaun - SMWhen I envision a tortured hero, many things cross my mind but nothing comes close to the sort of torture Lorcan experiences in my novella, To Kiss A Leprechaun.

You see, Lorcan has the most hauntingly beautiful eyes you’d ever want to gaze into. Look inside them and lose yourself in his beauty. Listen to his voice and feel love. But then shift your vision to take in the rest of him, and you are left cold.

A vengeful witch hundreds of years ago cursed Lorcan with an ugly spell that is particularly ugly. Hundreds of years have passed, and nobody has succeeded in lifting the curse. Only the kiss of his true love, a woman with a rare blend of blood and DNA, can lift the curse.

But even if he can find her, will she be able to overlook his hideous face and body for long enough to kiss him?

Put yourself in Lorcan’s shoes… no love of his life for hundreds of years. Children run from him, people wince and frown when they’re brave enough to look at him. They try to cope by focusing on the earth or sky, or some point far away behind his shoulder.

The Kiss is an ancient tradition in the magical Kisswish Village. Aine is the young beauty he has chosen to kiss him on this spring equinox. Repulsed at the thought of kissing the ugly leprechaun, Aine tries everything to get out of doing it, but there is no way out.

What would you do if you had to kiss a horrifically ugly man or woman? Can you look beyond the surface and find beauty in spite of the packaging?

This story is a fantasy romance novella and is a good read for young adults as well as adults. A description could be ‘when Beauty and the Beast meets Sleeping Beauty’.

Will Aine put an end to Lorcan’s torture? I’d love you to check out To Kiss A Leprechaun, the first in a new trilogy. The next novella in the series is To Kiss A Mermaid, and will be available in June!

Lorcan’s plight is very different to what Rick goes through in The Sheikh’s Spy. He’s been thrown in the dungeon of an evil sheikh’s palace, and is regularly beaten, abused and starved. I’ll have to make it up to him for such an experience, and I will in his own novella, The Sheikh’s Crowning, coming in May 2013!

So which form of torture is worse — Lorcan’s or Rick’s? Comment below…

Thanks for stopping by!

Love Is In Bloom

Welcome to the Authors In Bloom Blog Hop!

Spring is in the air and so is the scent of delightful flowers that are blooming. Natural aromatherapy is wafting on the breeze!A dear friend, long since departed, once said, “flowers represent the innocence of the earth.” I have come to believe her insight. Flowers are pure, vibrant with color, complex designs and shapes, and provide us with the ever evolving plant medicine such as aromatherapy, flower essences, and vibrational energy healing.

I’ve always been inspired by the lore of fairies and how they tend to flowers, bushes and trees. There is no doubt that certain smells trigger different memories for each of us.

For instance, when jasmine ripples through the window on balmy night air, I think of pleasant evenings spent in an exotic Caribbean hideaway, or the romance and intrigue of India.

Orange reminds me of my childhood, when my “perfume of choice” was cheery, bright, sunny orange blossom. I lived in Florida, home of countless orange groves. It was a happy, sunny, light-hearted time in my life so whenever I smell orange blossom today it triggers joy and that elusive sense of ‘good times’ thanks to my experiences with these flowers.

To Kiss a LeprechaunI recently wrote a novella called To Kiss A Leprechaun. It takes place in Ireland in the spring time. What glorious bursts of flowers and leaves of all colors and varieties decorate the Irish landscape, thanks to the magical fairies that tend to all things green with love and delight.

Eating flowers is a sensuous and enchanting experience, and we don’t do nearly enough of it in my opinion. Recently I bought rose syrup and lavender syrup, and pour them over all sorts of things from blueberry waffles to coconut ice cream.

Here are a few edible flowery favorites, chosen by color, of course!

Yellow is Dandelion, Orange is Calendula Marigold, Pink and White are Rose or Carnation, Fuchsia for Purple and Red, Lavender, Lilacs and Violets for the lighter shades of Purple. Can you imagine anything prettier than Pansies in your salad? They taste divine!

Remember, only eat flowers you know are pesticide free, were grown as edible flowers and make sure you wash them thoroughly and blot them dry. If in doubt, don’t eat them!

Here’s a luxurious refreshing recipe for the spring and summer season:

Rose Garden Salad

5 cups of green, red and purple lettuces, dandelions, wild greens, spinach, Boston lettuce, mustard greens or whatever other greens you prefer. Just make it a good mix and toss well.

1 cup frozen (cooked) peas or fresh if you have them.

1 cup of fresh basil leaves

¼ cup of pine nuts (optional)

The petals of one rose (the stronger the scent the stronger the flavor)

Dressing

Equal measures of approximately. 1 Tablespoon each of honey, plain or honey yogurt, olive oil, rose syrup. Mince a garlic clove and mix it in. Taste, and if you like, add the juice of half a lemon.

Instructions

Wash all greens and leafy ingredients and tear them into a bowl. Add peas, sliced basil leaves, pine nuts and about half the rose petals. Mix the dressing ingredients, pour over the salad and toss well.

Bon appetit!

Edible Flower Tips:

Violets are edible, but African Violets are not considered actual violets and are not edible. Please don’t make this mistake. If you want to get into edible flowers, research the topic before you start eating flowers or offering them to others in dishes you create.

Gardening Tip:

There is rhyme and reason to how you plant your garden, just like you think about how to seat your guests at a dinner party. In the same way we seek harmony at the table, some plants enjoy being near each other more than others. Check into the topic of Companion Planting.

Marigolds protect tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries and roses from many pests.

Chives protect your roses from many pests.

Radishes can help protect cucumbers

Peppermint can deter ants

Yarrow attracts ladybugs, and ladybugs eat tons of pests that destroy your plants…

There is so much more, and it is a natural and fascinating way to protect your baby plants so they can grow big and nourish you and your family.

Thanks for reading my post! How magical is your garden? Do you have a green thumb or do you get your herbs, veggies and edible flowers from the local market?

Coffee Time Romance Thursday Thirteen: Romantic Castles of Ireland

coffeethoughtsThursday13: Romantic Castles of Ireland!

We are still in the month of March, long associated with all things Irish and the blossoming of nature. Last week’s wonderful post about Celtic gods and goddesses got my creative juices flowing. So, I thought I’d take you on a mini-tour around 13 of the most fascinating Irish castles!

For such a small country, it never ceases to amaze me how there is one jewel of a castle after another scattered across the fabric of green rolling hills. I read somewhere there are over sixty Irish castles, and many are restored and inhabited. Some are open to the public. Others have morphed into splendid resorts where anyone with a high-limit credit card can feel like royalty for a few days.

Ashford Castle, Co. Mayo

It is easy to imagine a fairytale unfolding within the walls of this enchanting castle. It was built in 1228 by the de Burgo family and was owned by the Guinness (beer) family for many centuries. It is now a hotel, so if you are as rich as a princess, you can stay here and pretend you are one. Ashford Castle

Blarney Castle, Co. Cork

Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster, is said to have saved an old witch from drowning. In gratitude she revealed how to access the secret powers within the Blarney stone, gifted to an earlier McCarthy in 1314 by Robert the Bruce. Another legend says the stone is the famous Lia Fail, the magical stone upon which Irish kings were crowned. Legends abound. The stone resides atop Blarney castle. One kisses it by hanging upside down into thin air with a steep drop below (been there, done that). It is one of Ireland’s greatest tourist attractions. Blarney Castle

Dromoland Castle, Co. Clare

This fairytale castle is now a hotel for the globetrotting rich and famous. It was once home to the O’Brien clan, who were direct descendants of Brian Boru, the last High King of Ireland. Of all the Irish castles, this is perhaps the most enchanting. It is said Michael Jackson spent a lot of time there and fell in love with the property. Dromoland Castle

Leap Castle, Co. Offaly

This very haunted castle is in a state of restoration. Fierce family rivalry to establish the new leader of the O’Carroll clan in the 1500s led to the brutal murder of a family priest in the chapel while he was chanting and performing mass. Paranormal investigators have filmed on location here, and I’ve seen reference that the hauntings are by malevolent spirits. Leap Castle

Lismore Castle, Co. Waterford

Built in 1185 by Prince John, the Dukes of Devonshire have held it as their Irish residence since the mid-1700s. It is one of the most romantic looking castles in all Ireland. It was rebuilt Gothic style by a prominent architect in the early 1800s. Lismore Castle

Trim Castle, Co.

This castle has been through turbulent times and is currently undergoing a vast restoration. It was once the Royal mint where Irish coins were pressed. It is open to the public from Easter through Halloween. Part of the movie Braveheart was filmed here. Trim Castle

Winterthorne Castle, Southwest Coast of Ireland

Christmas SpiritsThis fictitious castle features in two of my novellas, The Sheikh’s Spy and Christmas Spirits. This magical castle was inherited by Anna O’Cleary, who became Queen of Zahiria. Christmas Spirits is a ghost story romance that makes for a good read all year round. The prequel in the Sheikhs of the Golden Triangle series is The Amulet. If you’re interested, read the interview I wrote recently with Winterthorne Castle (yes, these walls do talk!) at Laurie’s Paranormal Blogspot.

Glin Castle, Co. Limerick

This was the family seat of the Fitzgeralds for hundreds of years. This stunning castle is open half the year to the public as a hotel. What a place to book a wedding! Glin Castle

Waterford Castle, Co. Waterford

This breathtaking castle hotel is away from the mainland on an island, a ferry ride across the Suir River. It is associated with the Fitzgerald family, and they are said to have lived there until as recently as the mid-1950s. Waterford Castle

Malahide Castle, Co.

For those who prefer haunted castles, this one will give you five times the fright. No less than five ghosts still haunt this inhabited castle. The most beloved of these was “Puck” who was a 16th century court jester. He met an untimely end. Malahide Castle

Slane Castle, Co. Meath

This stunning castle is near where the High Kings of Ireland resided. You may recognize this castle from the Celtic Woman concerts. The slope of the surrounding fields creates a natural amphitheater for up to 80,000 people. U2, The Rolling Stones and many more have performed here over the years, and Bon Jovi is booked for a concert June 2013. Slane Castle

Donegal Castle, Co. Donegal

This is a very different castle and is an architectural jewel. It belonged to one of the most powerful Gaelic families in Ireland from the 400s to the 1500s – the O’Donnell clan. It is now owned by the Office of Public Works, has been renovated, and Gaelic cultural events are often held here. Donegal Castle

To Kiss a LeprechaunBy the way, one of my characters in my novella To Kiss A Leprechaun is an O’Donnell, but Tommy’s not from Donegal. This is a lighthearted fantasy romance with witches, wizards, spells and fairy mischief that takes place in Ireland, in case you care to check it out.

There’s nothing like an ancient castle, with the splendor of its history, to stimulate the imagination of a romance writer. I hope you enjoyed visiting these Irish castles with me. There are some amazing photos of them online. Let yourself be carried away to a world of lords, ladies, kings, magic and chivalry.

Thanks for reading my Thursday13. If you have time, I’d love for you to check out my books at GemmaJuliana.com.

Do you have a favorite fairytale castle? Tell us about it!

The Sheikh, The Shamrock & The Golden Triangle

Sheikhs of the Golden Triangle SeriesBy Gemma Juliana

The Sheikh's SpyIn The Sheikh’s Spy, you’ll meet Sheikh Adnan bin al Ramayad, the passionate, duty-bound ruler of Zahiria. His royal palace rests high on a hill, overlooking the city and the jewel-like blue of the Mediterranean Sea.Most of his land is desert, its golden sands warmed by solar rays as they blaze down all day. At night the sands release their warmth. A chill breeze, infused with the scents of flowers and the sea, blows across the land.

At the eastern edge of his kingdom lies Oasis Alb, or, Oasis of the Heart. Beyond stretch the sands of the magical Golden Triangle, in magnificent shades of pink, red and intense gold.

The Golden Triangle is home to a powerful fire spirit, and is shared by all four kingdoms of the region. It represents unity amid enmity.

So what do shamrocks have to do with all this?

Sheikh Adnan’s ancient bloodline includes the blood of foreign brides who married into Zahiria over the centuries. His inheritance includes homes in many faraway lands.

One such exotic jewel in the Zahirian crown is the mysterious estate known as Winterthorne Castle, not far from the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Ireland.

Christmas SpiritsAdnan’s ancestor, Anna O’Cleary, brought this magnificent estate into the family when she fell in love with Sheikh Khazan. Their undying love affair transcends death, a story that will surely touch your heart, in Christmas Spirits.

Shamrocks and four-leaf clovers abound in the ancient oak forest, the fields, and even within the stone circle.

But Anna’s blood is not the only Irish blood that runs through Adnan’s veins. There is a deeper, darker Irish blood blended with it, one that harbors secrets and pain.

Sheikh Adnan is also descended from Oonagh, the powerful Celtic witch who created the enchanted sapphire amulet that lies at the root of the treachery plaguing the region.

You’ll read about Oonagh, and the wars, greed and deceptions triggered by the magical amulet sapphire, in The Amulet.

New Beginnings

New Beginnings

Writing the first post for a new blog is a bit like starting a new novel.  Here I sit, staring at a blank page. Again. It feels sort of familiar…

But this time I’m not trying to create a great hook to lead the reader into my story. This time it’s about sharing my excitement with you.

Three of my novellas were just launched as ebooks.  They belong to the series, Sheikhs of the Golden Triangle. This series is best described as romantic suspense with paranormal overtones, and the heat level is hot.

Writing stories is great fun, but I’ve discovered a passion for creating worlds, kingdoms and even geographic locations. Soon I’ll add a map to my website showing the lay of the land in this fictitious grouping of kingdoms. I love being able to place an oasis here, and a fortress there. Perhaps the Golden Triangle is skirted on one side by mountains? No problem. Which country is landlocked, and which one lies along the coast of a sapphire sea?

I wrote close to two dozen stories in the past two decades, and they remain in varying degrees of completion in my drawers, on computer hard drives, and even in boxes under my bed.

Publication was a long time coming. If the process is anything like the maturing of a fine wine, then my stories should be ripe and rich enough to provide the consumer’s palate with a unique experience.

There is no more satisfying feeling than moving forward with a long-held dream. If you have had a desire to write, paint, sing, go back to school, or start a new career, I encourage you not to wait as long as I did.

There’s no time like now!

Thanks for visiting. Please sign up for my email list and check out my stories.
